The overall aim of this short course was to apply relevant geographic information contained in topographic base maps, open-source digital maps, and explore location services on mobile devices and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) navigators.
After successful completion of this course students will, through assessment activities, show evidence of their ability:
• Understand the policies and legislations on open source spatial data and maps;
• Describe the characteristics of different maps and their usefulness;
• Describe and explain methods to analyse and acquire primary data from maps;
• Describe the problems associated with traditional data collection from maps;
• Explain the need to make use of open-source digital maps;
• Read coordinates from a digital and hardcopy maps;
• Use a GPS navigator to navigate to given coordinates;
• Record and explore coordinates using GPS devices;
• Use location services on mobile devices and navigators.
